Last Light in the Garden

Opening night chat (courtesy of Emily Lucas)

Last Light, Dunedin Botanical Gardens, oil on canvas, 150 x 110cm

My new collection is drawn from the labyrinthian pathways that form the Upper Gardens of Dunedin’s Botanical Garden. The title 'Last Light in the Garden' refers to the mythological expulsion of Adam and Eve from the Garden of Eden. It's a meditation on my feelings of climate crisis anxiety. Wherever you look, across all forms of media, it appears we are facing the very real threat of compounding species extinction and therefore looming expulsion of the human race from Planet Earth. Last Light meaning Last Chance to fix the problems we all face. A dour topic, yes. I hope the works are beautiful but not without an undercurrent of apprehension, this immovable weighted shadow. Who's to say the end of the world wouldn't be a beautiful cataclysm anyway?

The exhibition is now closed at The Dowling St Studios and has moved to The Artist’s Room Fine Art Gallery until 26th March.

A Forest

Bob’s Cove Loop Track, oil on canvas with digital projection, 170 x 100cm

Bob’s Cove Loop Track, oil on canvas with digital projection, 170 x 100cm

Artbay Gallery, Queenstown

This new collection titled 'A Forest' explores the Wakatipu Basin and the varied wooded areas within. In response to the wildfires that ravaged Australia recently, I want to celebrate the remaining unique and fragile natural wonders we are so lucky to have. Everyday it becomes more evident that our forests are so very important.’

Nocturne – Selected Wanderings 2004-2019 is a survey of Sam Foley’s night works, spanning sixteen years. It features eighteen paintings from public, private and artist collections. Since his first foray into the leafy monochrome of Dunedin’s Town Belt he has kept coming back to the theme of ‘Night’. From the alleyways of his hometown Dunedin, to a snow-swept hill in Edinburgh, to the friendly corner bar in Berlin, Foley explores darkness in all its various landscapes.

1. Graff - Short for graffiti, ‘There is mad graff in Brooklyn.’

Although graffiti and street-art have often appeared in my work, in the past it has been incidental to environment, whereas now this subject has taken front and centre. The new collection explores the language of graff in multiple international and local urban environments, highlighting many similarities and contrasting the differences.

Dowling Street

'Rooftop Domestic, Back of Milford House', oil on canvas, 160 x 110cm

'Rooftop Domestic, Back of Milford House', oil on canvas, 160 x 110cm

Now 3 years since my last Dunedin show, this exhibition is a collection of paintings in, of and around about Dowling Street.

Having lived and worked on this street for 15 years the idea was to simply celebrate this colourful, diverse and very Dunedin location. Every place portrayed is within a short radius of my studio and makes for a personal idiosyncratic look at what is probably the unofficial Arts precinct of Dunedin. With 4 or 5 galleries or other art spaces on this one street, I'm sure if you crunched the numbers it would likely be the most densely populated arts area per-capita in the country. A wild claim perhaps but I think a good argument nonetheless.

I really have had a lot of fun putting this collection together. It's one those things where if you live and breath a location and have an idea for a painting, it can become so easy just to say 'I will paint that one later...' as it's literally right outside the window or front door. This exhibition pulls together the many strands and ideas about this place I call home.

Intersection, Lachlan Ave and Queens Dr       Oil on canavs with digital projection      2008

Sam’s solo exhibition in Pātaka‘s small gallery presents a selected survey of his paintings with animated projections as they have evolved over the last eight years. Most are urban nocturnes but there is also a work from 2010 of the Otira Gorge in which the sparkling water cascades down the canvas. The most recent works feature landscapes from the Porirua region.
